Everclear should have gotten the stain out of the bowl. I say smoke it into submission. Stick to basic burley. It will come around.

I say just smoke the sap out of it. A good 50 or so bowls shoot do the trick.

MikeDennison wrote: Fri Dec 07, 2018 8:08 am I've got a Savinelli Bing's Favorite that gave off a funky taste at first; it tasted just like stain smells. That said, it smoked like a charm. The forum codgers of the day advised me to just smoke the funk out of it, which I set to doing. I put a coupla bowls through that pipe every day for weeks. Now? Just as sweet as can be. Just throwin' in my two cents. :D

I have to agree with these guys. Smoke, smoke, smoke. Not just once a week but every smoke till it behaves. You'll both be happier. 8-)

I would clean the bowl with 151 rum, then wipe it with honey diluted with the same rum. It works well for me.

OK, here's what I've done. First I scraped what little buildup of cake there was, which wasn't much, until I had all I could get out without cutting into the wood. Then I cleaned the heck out of the bowl using Q-Tips loaded with Everclear. Then I wrapped sandpaper around a dowel and sanded it down to bare wood. Then I heated it up in a toaster oven until the pipe was warm and while it was warming I mixed up a couple drops of Honey with Everclear. I then coated the warm bowl with the mix. I'm going to let it sit overnight and start smoking Carter Hall & PA in it tomorrow. This pipe will either sweeten up or it'll go into the brush pile to be burned this spring. Life is way too short to worry about a foul tasting Pipe!

I don't have any Rum, but it sounds like a good idea.

I have never had one that would not come around. If you get to that point with it, offer it up for postage before you toss it.

I'll do just that, but hopefully I won't have to.

LOL, I must admit that it sounds like a good idea to buy some Rum, but the fact is that I simply don't like it, especially that spiced stuff. I drink very little, but I do keep some good Bourbon (Knob Creek) and a jar of Moonshine (legal) on hand for strictly medicinally purposes (cough, cough) :buddy:
