I just build rimcake and figure it protects the rim. This is just a modest start. I have only been smoking this pipe since last March, and it was NOS. The picture is from July, so I have made a little progress since.

Dr. G needs to come out with a Dr. Grabow "Father Tom" that has a pre-carbonized rim. :D

My view is, it's a little furnace to burn tobacco in. Furnaces get dark around the edges. So do my pipes. Doesn't bother me a'tal. They look smoked. Here's one as good as Fr_Tom's.

I might be in the minority here, but rim darkening to me is just character marks. Like when you first drop your first motorcycle. As sick as it might sound, if i owned a 3k Tom Eltang, if the rim darkened, i couldn't care less. I'm more into the tobacco and flavor aspect of piping. Pipes are just a tool for me to enjoy the leaf. Besides i think pipes looks bad ass rimmed up.

Think of all the Grabow estates you could buy with that $3K.

Or even better get 7 of them for a 7-day set and spend the rest on SPRT or Low Country VaBur or [insert bargain brand of preference here].

Its just really weird how i took on the piping hobby. Its literally all about the leaf for me. If i was given a 2$ basket pipe and a 5K S. Bang. If the basket pipe smokes better, that will be the pipe, i would take. I would love to have a 500 pound celler and 3 good smoking briars, and 3 Cobs. I look at pipes in the same mind state as a hammer. If it smoked good, its a keeper, and i only 3 of them. If its a gurgle queen, it will get used as tinder for the wood stove. I dont want 100 pipes, i only want a hand few of good smokers.

Father, care to share your methods for optimal rim-cake building? Do you leave a fair bit of tobacco sort of danglin' out the bowl when you pack?

I do tend to use the full bowl, and when I light, it will rise up over the rim. I thumb it into place at first opportunity. The real trick is just smoking it a lot and not cleaning the rim.

The darker the rim, the sweeter the smoke.

I run a small hotel in New Orleans. It's in Louisiana, in case you're thinking of another New Orleans I've never heard of.
