Another 'bay purchase- a no-name basket pot stamped "Italy" on the stummel. While sterilizing it, I got sloppy with the isopropyl and raised this oxidation on the stem. I'll hafta dig out the Soft Scrub.

Upon futher inspection, that stem appears to be upside down according to how it lines up with the shank. I could be wrong. Nice grain on that one!
Yup, you were right. It strikes me as not being the original stem...even when right-side up it still doesn't fit quite right. It does have a nice grain, but I'm not liking how it smokes. Think I may offer it to a good home.

You can always send it off to Norwood for a replacement stem. He makes nice, affordable stems with a fast turn around. There and back in a few days.

Why are you sterilizing it? You don't trust the seller?
I never smoke a pipe, new or estate, until I've done my thing on it with Everclear and pipe cleaners.

@MikeDennison Just drop your pipe in a box with a letter telling him that you want a replacement stem, color, shape and material and include your phone number, he'll call you when he's finished and to arrange payment and ship back. He's quick.

I hesitate to do this, but I have had mixed results with Norwood.

My personal theory is that the father is very good, and the son just slaps on a cast stem and buffs off the casting marks. I am picky with buttons. They don't have to be the same or anything, but the unfinished ones never sit correctly in my teeth. I can explain all this and say I am willing to pay extra for the time to finish the button. The father does it. The son charges me for it and doesn't touch the button.

Just my experience... I WILL say they are always quick on the turnaround. This is consistently good.
