Again with a bug sprayer?!? What's going on with the videos I keep picking? I like that she calls it a Flit Gun, which is what I first thought when I saw it but I didn't think anyone would know what I was talking about.

Growing up we always had two types of bread in the house, white and rye. We lived a few blocks away from the Village Bakery which was an amazing Polish family joint. My brother and I would always go there and they would let us try all the cookies. On the weekends the line would be around the corner. I miss that place. When it came time for my mom to buy store bought bread it was always Home Pride for white and Beefsteak for rye.
Now all we buy is Maier's Italian white.

Here is the installment you have all been waiting for...the white bread most served in our house when I was growing up.



Mrs Baird's Bread began in 1908 in Fort Worth. In 1908 Ninnie Baird started baking her bread and her sons sold it their neighborhood. She bought a commercial oven and business began to grow. Business was a boomin' for a long time too; all the way up to 1998 when the Baird family sold out to Grupo Bimbo, a baking concern based in Old Meh-hee-co. They had to sell because a couple of years earlier the Baird family (and their company) had a fine levied against them by Uncle Sugar for conspiring to fix the price of white bread.

Bimbo still bakes Mrs Baird's but no Baird family members are involved anymore. I bet Jose Bimbo isn't standing at the loading dock at day break loading that fresh, hot bread into trucks. Not by a long shot. No one cares like family.


The guy in this commercial is Vernon Baird, a grandson of Mrs. Baird. Vernon was the president of Mrs Baird's and was in lots of commercials back in the 1970s and 80s. Here's one of Vernon making a sandwich and talking a little bread "biness". Things used to be so simple. He passed away in 1992.


Whew. This post really took me down Memory Lame, er, Lane. I'm just exhausted. I'll post my favorite sammich recipes later. Anticipation is the best sauce. One of those sammiches has to do with white bread, 'maters, Hellmann's, and an added twist ingredient. Stay tuned! Same bread time, same bread channel!

Most of my favorite sandwiches are on white bread, but my absolute favorite is made on pumpernickel. This sandwich premiered on a 1970 episode of Dragnet. Bill Gannon was a lover of life and food, and often shared his strange recipes with Joe Friday. Joe was a notorious stick in the mud and rarely, if ever, ate any of Bill's creations. This is Bill's Garlic Nut Butter Sandwich. Joe, predictably, turned his nose up at the sandwich. The screen shots are from the episode A.I.D: The Weekend.

Take two slices of pumpernickel bread.

Spread one with your preferred brand and style of peanut butter. Both creamy and crunchy work equally well.


Spread one with cream cheese.


Crush garlic cloves over the cream cheese side, allowing juice to drip into cream cheese. Nowadays I use the finely chopped garlic that comes in jars and I really garlic it up. Don't skimp in the juice.


Put the two slices together and enjoy! It really is good, believe it or not!

This next sandwich is another odd combination. I got it in 1978 from a friend of mine from Alabama who claimed it was a real Southern delicacy. I had never heard of it here in Texas, but I’ve never shied from trying new foods so I made one and he was right...it’s delicious. I give you the Peanut Butter, Tomato, and Mayonnaise sandwich.

Spread one slice of white bread with peanut butter.
Spread mayonnaise on the other slice. Hellmann’s or Duke’s Real Mayonnaise only. Do not make this sandwich with Miracle Whip!
Top with tomato slices
Add 2nd piece of bread, cut in half and enjoy!

Interesting. I'll have to ask my buddy that spent a decent portion of his life in Alabama about that one.

More often than not I'll use mayo instead of butter for the outside of a grilled sammich. Changes the flavor of the bread a lot

The next few sandwiches don't get any pictures. I used to eat these when I was a teenager, but I haven't made one in ages. I might though just because. Comfort food, guilty pleasures...whatever. All on white bread. Let me add here that when you cut a sandwich in half you should cut it on the diagonal. It is the superior cut and sandwiches just taste better that way.

Well, PB&J. Those I have eaten all through the years. Jif only, strawberry or peach preserves. No grape jelly.

Potted meat. Yes, it's gross but what can I say? I loved it. Lay it on thick on one slice, then a thick slather of Miracle Whip on the other. Slap them together and go to town. I'm not one of these that despise Miracle Whip, but it has to be on the right sandwich. Like the next one.

This next sandwich is made with the processed lunchmeat made by either Land O Frost or Carl Buddig. There's just enough meat in one package for one sandwich, two if you want to stretch it. This sandwich is more conventional. Lunchmeat, lettuce, tomato, and either Miracle Whip or Hellmann's. Fritos on the side.

I suppose a list of sandwiches could go on and on...Fried Egg Sandwich, Meatloaf Sandwich (mayo or MW), Tuna Fish...but that's enough, I guess. How about a few contributions from the rest of y'all? I might need to expand my repertoire.
