I've posted this before but it's buried deep and not really accessible, so I want to repost it here. You can see the last pre-smoking machine used at Sparta (a carousel kind of contraption) in action starting at about the 3:45 mark. The working factory shop shots are the Grabow craftsmen making Dr. Grabow pipes. The outdoor picnic is a Grabow employee shindig. You can spot various Grabow pipes being smoked including a CDL. At 4:54 you can hear the Dr. Grabow song. It's a cool piece of American pipe smoking history.

Watching the video again and paying attention to the pre-smoker, I'm convinced it was a gimmick. Now, to me, a pipe gimmick is not a bad thing. I like the metal pipes with their humidomes (Vikings, Airogrates, Falcons), the carburetor pipes (CDL, Y-B, Kaywoodie, Medico), and the big expansion chambers (Filto, Kirsren). There are probably at least another 100 gimmicks out there, all to help a smoker achieve a cooler, drier, tastier smoke.

The pre-smoker was supposed to take the bite out, but I just can't see it doing much good. We all know to break in a pipe you need to smoke it down to the heel and build a little cake, maybe 10 good smokes? And that's just the start. No way those pipes got even a little broke in on that short merry-go-round ride. I don't fault Grabow for doing it though. It was marketing genius. Plus, RJ Reynolds kept sending 25 lb boxes of PA to the factory, gratis, to keep the fires stoked. Tom Douglas told me he figures Grabow employees never had to buy tobacco as long as the pre-smoker was up and running!

God bless the U.S.A., its tobacco traditions, and the generations of Americans who made it great, and continue to do so.

The world may be changing. Tastes may be changing. Good taste never goes out of style. I predict a pipe and cigar renaissance one of these days in our lifetimes.

Simple pleasures are the best pleasures.

I of course am a sucker for the gimmick. I have always liked this video.

The fellow singing the Dr Grabow song sounds like Conway Twitty.
