Love that top freehand.
That's #2 pipe I made from a piece of firewood.
It works well for scooping tobacco out of a pouch!

Both smoke good
I use a 3/32 drill for the draw hole and pilot for the chamber.
The um-Paul type I hand stems for and turned down to fit .
The second , I drill to fit the straw,,
The second is a belly Churchwarden pipe .It rest nicely on top of my belly while cruse-in the internet
Are you leaving them in the "raw?" Or have you or will you oil them or stain them at all.?
Haven't made up my mind yet.
I have die for the pipes .
I have not sealed the wood yet/
I use gun stock finish to seal the wood after shaping.
I usually put 3 coats of sealer on with sanding in between coats .
I did my pick-axe in red die.Image
That's a killer pick-axe! You turn and do all the finishing work on the stem as well?

I greatly admire your inventiveness. The pipes you make are literally, chunks of wood with two drilled holes. Bravo!

THANKS !!!
I started trying to make a pick axe to replace my first store bought pipe .
I burned a hole in the chamber ,and it has a crack the the side of the bowl
Picked the pipe up in the mid 80's from a Tinder Box tobacco shop that was in Carpentersville Illnoise
Image

I do all the work myself.
I have made quite a few
This pipe came from a oak 4X4 from a skid from work.
No stain, just sealed and sanded. It's the first pipe I made using my lathe .
I have a old 9" South Bend lathe ,bench top.

The last thing I want is a pick axe catching my eye.

Everyone who has an avatar that wears an eyepatch on PSF must feel the same way. The very thought of it gives me the willies and I would rather not think about it.

I am very impressed by Old Welders's pipes. They're really beautiful.

Trying to improve from the first .
#1 has a hot spot between the bowl and stem .
Back of the bowl .
I made a 3rd for a good friend that is thicker in the back wall.
I have just found a really awesome curly hunk of firewood that I just pulled off the stack
This is going for #4
I'm far from a pipe maker ,just like working on my own firearms ,I'm not a gunsmith.
I enjoy puttizing .,tinkering and just keeping busy.
I have been a steel fabricator , welder for along time .
Making things is my happy time
I have helped many people build things ,hot rods , homes, trailers and more .
Customized my bikes , making what ever I could .
I found a old photo of me on my 69 HD shovel I bought when I was 21 ,back in 78 .
A friend snapped this while out riding around in Wisconsin in 1996
No pipe , would of loss it while out .
