The words stummel and shank can be used interchangeably when it comes to parts of a pipe, right?

I'm not asking about prison.

yeah well technically the stummel is the partially finished block that will become the bowl and shank, but I think it gets used both ways enough that it's not worth picking nits

The stummel is the wooden part of a pipe. Yes, there is a shank but it's made out of the stummel. You wouldn't say nice shank when you're referring to nice grain on a pipe.
