Post a picture of you smoking a pipe and I'll move it there.

I have finally got a filling method that works for me and it's so easy.
Place roughly a bowls worth (just guess) of baccy in the palm of your hand then keeping the palm cupped rub the inverted bowl over said baccy until the bowl is full.
Takes a couple of trys to get the idea but to me this is so much easier than layers.
Idiot proof you might say.

Great tips! I'm still learning by trial and error, but hey, practice practice practice.
The main thing is to enjoy as much as possible, and start over if necessary when packing...
I even find that a few minutes a day of slow puffs, and relight later, is a great way to enjoy a bowl throughout the day.
Thanks for sharing

My pipe filling advice for newbies:
fill the pipe loosely full up to the rim - with well crumbled tobacco ... then press it down to roughly 2/3 with your thumb ... and fill up the remaining space, press down slightly.
Check the drafts.
If it´s feeling too loose ... press again.
If it´s too tight ... loosen the top and middle with your tool.
When finally checking the fill with your thumb it should show a certain elasticity ...

Light up the tobacco while drawing air through the pipe ... press down the tobacco slightly ... light it a second time ...
now it should work.
Controll the drafts with your tool troughout.

When in danger that the burn goes out ... put a finger on top of the bowl to minimize the drafts ...

No Internet when I began, and no pipe-smoking buddies to teach me anything, so I huffed and I puffed and I blew that 'backy down like a mosquito truck from the '60s. Tongue bite wasn't the word for the flame-throwing I suffered. Had to figure out for myself that the object was a long, cool smoke. Just being told that early on would have helped the learning curve a great deal.

But now I'm a newbie to the tobacco itself when it comes to non-aro, non-OTC styles and have things heading this way to try. Including some aromatic, too. There are a lot of old, common brands of those I never tried, including, oddly enough, Half and Half. Once I found Cherokee, it was all I smoked for many years.

So it's nice to see comments about tobaccos and newbies, and not only pipes and technique. Good thread for newbies of various aspects.
