I have learned that at the bottom of a bowl, I dump the rest the moment the smoke turns from white to bluish. That happens a few seconds before the acrid sets in.

Hout is spot on, little wad of cotton in all my well pipes, been doing that for years. Never gone sour, clean up involves twisting out and replacing cotton when it browns up. Can go all day on the same system pipe with clean cotton. I blow through the stem after each smoke in lieu of pipe cleaners and stuff it in my pocket, never had an issue.
