Oh boy, well I thought about putting the wife out, but she's good to me and so I don't think she would take kindly to putting her out of the house.

I can't speak for anyone else, but for me "have to" is a result of mutual respect. She doesn't like the smell, so out of respect for her I try to minimize it. There are some lines drawn in the sand on certain subjects worth fighting for, but displaying my pipes is certainly not one of them. My enjoyment is in smoking them.

Honey, I'm gonna have a pipe so go stand in the garage for an hour, don't forget your phone.

The update. Wife gets up this morning, halfway through first cup of coffee notices the curio, gives the hairy eyeball, I return hairy eyeball with look of determination. Wife opens curio and rearranges a couple of the silk flowers but leaves pipes as they were. It’s detente, hostilities avoided, peace is achieved. For now.....

Sounds to me like an "all clear".
