Candy Cigarettes

My wife was out yesterday and stopped in a rural old-school gas station to fill up. On the shelves, she saw something she had not seen in ages. They were 39 cents a box.

Haven't seen those since I was a kid! If my father caught me with'em, he'd make me break them into pieces so I couldn't pretend I was smoking'em!

I think these were well-aged. I wonder how long it has been since they made these?

I buy these at my corner grocer for a quarter a pack. They're fresh. The box on the shelf will get empty in about two weeks and then a new, full, box will take it's place. I think there are two other pack designs. Don't ask me what they are. I don't pay that much attention. I can take a look tomorrow if anyone's interested.

I don't find these treats very tasty (says a man who likes Necco wafers). They last like sugar and I don't know, corn starch? gum arabic? It's some kind of binder to make them dry in thin cylinders. They're okay. For a quarter, how much is anyone going to complain?

At my B&M (grocery store) kids buy them. There isn't the anti-smoking onus in New Orleans that some other cities have when it comes to gateway candy. My B&M doesn't sell licorice pipes. I've asked but the ladies tell me I'd be the only one buying them---which has been the case with everything else I've asked them to carry.

Go figure.

Candy cigarettes. What'll they come up with next? Soda water fountains and bulldogs with rubber teeth!

When I was a kid, my much older brother gave me a pack of candy cigarettes like these. They were hollow, and filled with powdered sugar. When you would blow into them, a puff of sugar "smoke" would come out.
