Did you use a dremel on the bowls? Did you get a full inch?

The Mark Twain (top) has a Forever Stem that I had. I was able to get near an inch at the top and taper to the bottom standard bore. I used a step drill bit to ~ 1" and tapered with a rotary rasp bit.
The Mark Twain (bottom) has a standard MM Stem from another model that works well. I opened this pipe to ~ 3/4", again with step drill bit and finished with the rotary rasp bit.

I have bored out a variety of cobs and briars (and one morta) using a standard 7/8 drill bit and a dremel. I like this modification.
