Any recommendations?
Check out Eden.

IMO a parametric or semi-parametric EQ is essential. Every room/stage is different. The parametric gives you the best chance to adapt to different acoustics.

Agreed and you could also cram them in a rack case. It had too many buttons, lights and eq sliders for me to deal with. I kept it simple with tubes.
A heavy ass bass, phone cable strings, passive pickups, and tube power is what all those fancy esoteric lights and switches aim to emulate. Wanna sound like Jamerson? Dead ass strings a mute and lots of tubes.
Yep. I always subscribed to the theory less is more.

I was wondering the same thing as I read through this thread! Add me to the list; I mess around with the bass as well. I have a Takamine acoustic-electric and an Epiphone that I bought recently. I'm also in the market for a combo - been looking at older models like an Acoustic 136 or similar.

Argh...add me to the list, too. I'm a sax player who also plays utility bass..."utility" means I can hold down the bass line, but if you want a bassist who's actually a frustrated lead guitar player, I'm not your man. I also wind up singing lead a lot.
