This is how Mardi Gras starts in my neighborhood:

Image

The Northside Skull-and-Bones Gang parades through the neighborhood to wake everyone up for Mardi Gras Day at 5:00AM.

I said to Elizabeth, "It is very rare for me to be in a good mood."

She said, "I know. It's kind of eerie."

I am almost giddy. It is like the air is full of pheromones.

Mia always makes a point to stop by and say hello. She is twenty-one:

I am very happy. My neighborhood is very busy. I live about a mile from the French Quarter so people were passing my house en route, all dressed in costumes, both on foot and on bicycles.

The Zulu parade rolls six blocks behind my house. My neighborhood, Tremé, is full of people. Everyone is happy. Everyone.

This is why the New Orleans year revolves around Mardi Gras.

This is not Mrs. King:

Be a New Orleanian, wherever you happen to be today. Make some good memories. Happy Mardi Gras!

I had to move over so that a local couple could sit together without me in the middle. It was no bother. The man and I held the door open for each other but he won because he was waiting for his wife, so, I went first. Everyone is happy.

When some seats freed up on the other end of the bar they offered to move. "Oh, no," I said, "I am very happy you to sit next to you." They just gave me a full report of the Zulu parade Uptown. They were at the beginning, not at the end. This is why they are having lunch now. Zulu will not hit the end of their route until another two hours or so.

You have no idea what this is like. You live in the real world. I live in New Orleans. Everyone, everyone, everyone, everyone is busy skylarking and making good memories today. This is what we live for.

I love where I live. New Orleans is palpable.

The day goes on. I got to see one of my favorite people.

Then, I got a Zulu coconut.

Then, Amber blew me a kiss.

Such is Mardi Gras. I live on another planet.

Someone just gave me a necklace made of dried alligator heads painted gold. Mrs. King is going to be jealous.

I am well aware none of this makes any sense to you. I am livestreaming for my own reasons.

I am home now with Mrs. King. It has been a happy day of sensory overload. It is time to spend time with my chickens in peace and quiet.

This really was the best day ever. We're all gonna die. It's best to get up for the Mardi Gras.

Tomorrow, I will wish you all a hard Lent.
