Greetings, nice to find this place. I just started smoking a pipe after almost 50 years on this planet. I like to garden, and as a fun project, grew some Maryland 609. Bored one day, I made a pipe, and now... smoking. I have now purchased a couple of the burl / briar pipes, and experimented with some burley and cavendish from my local tobacco/cigar shop. I am having a difficult time trying to find a GOOD source to explain how to take home grown barn cured tobacco, and make it more palatable. The straight dried tobacco is somewhat harsh, and will give you a buzz after the first couple of puffs; strong stuff. I have fermented it with some success, and it smelled like straight ammonia (which I am told is a good thing), to top dressing it with some marshmallow vodka (ehh). I steamed a batch for 8 hours ( it DID NOT look like cavendish in the pipe shop), then dried. It was still kinda harsh, but better.
I am hoping someone on this forum grows their own, dries, and conditions it for a pipe with successes and failures or sends me in the right direction. Any help?

I have nothing for you in terms of growing/processing, but I am glad you are here. I bet someone will have some insight.

Cool beans. I’d love to try growing my own as well. I’ve read that tobacco is sometimes hung and smoked for flavor during the curing process, similar to how you might cure meat. That may be something you could try in a food smoker or some makeshift smoking box.
Good luck with it!

A while back I was looking into tobacco processing, as I was thinking about buying whole leaf and making my own blends. I found a lot of good info on this forum:

Particularly in the "Finishing" section. They have a fair number of posts on different methods depending on what your goal is, and I found a lot of interesting casing recipes.

Welcome! I typed a large response and figured I’d just say to get situated here and PM me when you have the time. I can get you started in the right direction and ncrobb can help you out some as well. I grew a big batch last year and it turned out great. I’m a few weeks away from having the raw leaf taste how I want it. When that happens, I will process to my liking. Ill start a thread on it so you can follow along, but this will be my first time futzing with Blending.
Anywho, stick around for a while.
