I haven't even finished my first ounce of Edward G. Robinson but I've got a solid opinion that I doubt is going to change when I finally finish the last quarter of the ounce.
I'm not against the Edward G. Robinson tobacco the way I'm not against Edward G. Robinson the actor. I like both EGRs.
EGR, the actor, was no Cagney and he was no Bogart, but EGR always delivered a solid and interesting performance. He was a professional.
EGR, the tobacco, is the same. It is reliable to deliver something just different enough, consistently, time and again.
I know both the actor and the tobacco have their fervent admirers. I'm coming up kinda luke warm on the tobacco. You want my score on a scale of 1-10?
EGR, the Actor: 8. He's got limited range but he knows how to deploy his range to get just about any demand done. Always entertains. A master of comic timing, tough guy smarts, a thick skin, and dramatic persona, EGR the actor never disappoints, from his first movie to his last picture.
EGR, the Tobacco: 6. It's got limited range and it gets the job done, i.e. it burns down to ash, but this tobacco doesn't do anything more than read its lines as directed. This tobacco is not as expressive as it's namesake. EGR, the man, smoked this tobacco blend. He had it specially mixed by his personal tobacconist. This is that recipe. It's fine. Me, I like my own favorite daily blend. This was EGR's. God bless him.
EGR the tobacco is a gem of a historical artifact. There aren't going to be any more blends of pipe tobacco named after movie actors any time soon. The Golden Age of Hollywood is over. Try this one out while you can. It's got good reliable flavor. After the first third, a bowl it's predictable----but there will be two more engaging acts to go after that!
EGR is better than average but one ounce is enough for this mug.

I think you nailed it on the tobacco part
The acting part is pretty much like the tobacco part

I like the stuff... especially on the porch on an autumn night, when the air is crisp and cool.

I have smoked probably 4 oz total of EGR. It is OK, and I would smoke it all day if it were all I had. It is not all I have, and it is more expensive than things I like more.

The Troll Whisperer
If a friend asked me over to her house to spend 90 minutes watching an old EGR movie, I'd be in. EGR lends a layer of panache to a movie. Plus, there are other actors and the plot is guaranteed to be moving along briskly. Every EGR performance is a study in the art of professional acting.
If a friend asked me over to her house to spend 90 minutes smoking a pipe packed with EGR, I'd take a raincheck. The tobacco is good, don't get me wrong, but, when it is the focus of a 90 minute smoke, there isn't a lot of variety in that show. I don't think anyone calls this blend a real dottle-milker. EGR blend performs but a little of this goes a long way.
Now, I enjoy smoking SWRA, a tobacco flavored with Dutch Liqueur vs. wind, and SWRA provides a consistent smoke. I find that SWRA has more personality than EGR. If anyone wants to debate whether SWR, himself, had more personality than EGR, himself, we can, but that will be another thread.
EGR's reputation in the tobacco world is bigger than it may otherwise be if more people tried it. SWRA's reputation in the tobacco world is smaller than it should obviously be if more people tried it. Regular SWR has the right reputation. It is what it is. EGR is what it is, too. EGR is a somewhat aromatic pipe tobacco with a picture of Edward G. Robinson on the label. It was the great man's favorite smoke. EGR tobacco isn't bad. I'm not saying that. It's fine.
This isn't my favorite blend by a long shot. After all the hoopla, I expected a bit more. It would make an excellent desert island tobacco. I will give it that. I someday may buy a whole tub EGR, even, in preparation of my being marooned.
