Hello,

I’ve recently purchased this Dunhill pipe for my husband. I’ve tried looking up the date codes on it but I’m having a bit of trouble. After the made in England it looks like there are two exclamation points or it could be an 11 I think. Can anyone help me out on this? I’m really hoping that I didn’t make a mistake buying this for the Mister. :(

Thank you,
Reecy

Reecy, I'll take a shot at this. The 197 is the shape number. This pipe shape is a billiard.

F/T stands for fishtail and is the kind of stem or mouthpiece the pipe has.

The two dots under the 11 is actually a line. MADE IN ENGLAND 11 :1960+11, your pipe was made in 1971

The circled 4 is the bowl size and the S is for Shell.

Keep checking back to see if anyone corrects me.

Thank you Kevin. Since this was one of my first purchases I’m pretty nervous. I don’t want to buy my husband a gift and make a mistake, I know he’ll love it for the sentiment but still.

Yeah... I was thinking, ma'am, that you can't really go wrong with this gift.

Thank you everyone! I’m going to encourage him to join here. He started collecting about a year ago and it’s a lot of fun looking for older and interesting pipes. :)

I don’t think anyone would mind receiving a beautiful pipe like that from their wife! Very nice choice.
