Cake is a good moisture sponge as is burnt wood. A pipe will char over time so a little cake will help slow the burn. 16th of an inch max. I've cleaned many a used pipe that was caked to the point that you couldn't get a pinkie in it. Talk about a short smoke....

I have always let a dimes worth of cake build up in my pipes. I feel I getter a cooler and more flavorful smoke this way. I dedicate all of my pipes to either certain genres or to specific pipes. When I am done with a bowl I will double over a couple of fluffy pipe cleaners and wipe the inside of the bowl removing any ash or loose tobacco.
I have to ream a pipe once every year or two which is no big deal. The old timers who showed me what to do insisted that cake is a very important thing.
