I bought a .410 just for that reason.
Some of the biggest squirrels I’ve ever seen were in Princeton NJ which is also the first place I’d ever seen black squirrels lol. That place is loaded with tasty tree rats! I did a double take when I say the black ones run up a tree!
NJ is loaded with huge squirrels but the only problem is they are in residential areas where you can't hunt. Then again walking to your yard and picking them off takes the fun out of hunting.

There used to be a really big blackberry bush in the woods behind my parents when I was young. Mom really knew how to make a blackberry cobbler.

I'd say to just get a pellet gun but mine is almost as loud as a 22 lol. Hard to even shoot it in my back yard because of that. When I was doing the sighting in it blew through 3/4" of stacked cardboard and the 3/4" plywood behind it lol

Where I live the police come around and do a welfare check if they don't hear any gunshots for a month. Or they used to. The police all quit. Mayor brought in a chief from outside. The county sheriff is good, but doesn't have time for welfare checks. Now the criminals have no one to protect them.
