I’ve never worried about smoking to the bottom. Sadly most of my bowls are cut short, do to time crunches these days with kids. Once I looked at the bowl of one of my well used pipes, and the bottom was still visible. There was no cake down there. Who cares, the pipe will smoke great regardless.
+ 1 on your technique
Fill, light, puff,
Distraction

Or
Fill, light, puff
Change mind
Choose new pipe different tobacco
Fill, light, puff
Dinner Bell

Heck sometimes it is
Fill
Distraction
No fire 🔥

Other times
Fill, lighter failure
Distraction
No pipe

It’s rare to make it to the bottom of the bowl spitting ashes

It is a cruel world
:tumble:
Yep, point proven. Just dump it in the trash and you're done. Or, just don't even start the process. Horde all the tobacco just to look at it when you're feeling lonely. Done and done.

I come here when I'm lonely.

Hold me.

There's nothing quite like the cool metallic embrace of submerging yourself in a bathtub filled with tins of tobacco...

I don't know if there's a science of reaming as such, but experience taught me that a good knife, nicely sharpened and with a rounded tip, does a great job in removing any excess cake. That's why I use a Rodgers of Sheffield pipe knife with the wood handle. They also are very good at slicing plugs.
Unfortunately, I think they were discontinued, so I'm glad I bought a few of them.
Here is an example.

You get it. OCD clean internals and rim but I like cake. That was pre manicuring with a knife, it was smoking so sweet but only lasted like 7 minutes. It's back to the twenty something range again. Weird-ohs.

I let the entry door hinges squeal. It's cheaper than an alarm
