I stopped listening to them.
Mark up another fail for me then since I can't ever seem to get to the bottom, BOTTOM of a bowl, except in very rare occasions!
You miss my point bud... When I stopped listening and by that I mean giving a rip to what the "experts" pontificated, I stopped "failing" and started enjoying.

Hear everyone, listen to a some, ignore others. You'll find your way.
Wait, what? The Internet isn't always right?! ;)

Trust me, when it comes to pipe smoking, I learned early on that most of the repeated info is either personal preference, old wives tales, or just romantic notions. Like many other hobbies, whatever works best for you is the "right" way FOR YOU. Forget what everybody else is saying. When it comes to smoking a pipeful of tobacco, I've never had the goal to get to the very bottom. Once I don't like the taste and/or I'm having some mechanical issues with getting it to relight or whatever, I'm done with it. I might be a cheap bastard, but a couple milligrams of lost tobacco when I smoke isn't going to change my life style.

@kschatey sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Depends on the pipe, the tobacco, my mood, how much time I have or the current crumb count in @Mr Beardsley beard.

@Wildcat I really enjoy listening to Fred Hanna on the PM Radio Show. He never comes off as snobbish or anything like that.

I’ve never worried about smoking to the bottom. Sadly most of my bowls are cut short, do to time crunches these days with kids. Once I looked at the bowl of one of my well used pipes, and the bottom was still visible. There was no cake down there. Who cares, the pipe will smoke great regardless.

Smoke five brothers or ryback. You'll get there every time

Pfftt... I just fill the pipe with tobacco and then dump it in the trash. Smoking it is too much effort.

+ 1 on your technique
Fill, light, puff,
Distraction

Or
Fill, light, puff
Change mind
Choose new pipe different tobacco
Fill, light, puff
Dinner Bell

Heck sometimes it is
Fill
Distraction
No fire 🔥

Other times
Fill, lighter failure
Distraction
No pipe

It’s rare to make it to the bottom of the bowl spitting ashes

It is a cruel world
