I feel like Moxie has been greatly toned down since I first had it many years ago. I believe that it is now under the Coca-Cola distribution umbrella whereas before it was independent. The same happened to Ale81 ("A Late One") here which was a KY product that was like a cross between lemon-lime and ginger ale, but it's also way toned down on the unique flavor and way ramped up on sugar. That seems to be the way with everything now. It all just tastes like... SUGAR.

It does seem sweeter than when I was a kid, so you may be on to something. But I still enjoy an ice cold Moxie in a glass bottle.

My first experience with Moxie seven years ago or so was a glass bottle. The last time just a couple years ago all I could find was plastic.

Yeah, the glass bottles are getting really hard to find. Occasionally I find them in Cracker Barrel nowadays.
