The 8x57 cartridge was simply the 7x57 expanded, but the apparent felt recoil was about double.MikeDennison wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 3:02 amOn both ends is the truth, sir! I can testify to the recoil! My dad hunted with a 303 British at the time, and we used to argue back and forth about which was the best rifle. Don't think we ever settled it. Good times.Ronv69 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 11:36 amThe 8x57 cartridge was simply the 7x57 expanded, but the apparent felt recoil was about double.MikeDennison wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 3:02 amOn both ends is the truth, sir! The 303 was slightly less by the numbers, but it had a worse stock. The 8x56r Nazi ammo was much worse than either.MikeDennison wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 12:32 pmI can testify to the recoil! Wish I had both of those ol' rifles now. Good memories. And they make for good front-porch talk.Ronv69 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 5:50 pmThe 303 was slightly less by the numbers, but it had a worse stock. Yeah, I wish I had my Garand back! Despite the abuse that I took from hunting ammo combined with worn out springs. I had it before I went to gunsmith school. I paid $125 for it. And the 100% matching Winchester M1 carbine that I sold for another $125. The Austrian Mannlicher was the most beautifully made rifle I have owned. A mass produced military rifle with a blue that was close to the old Colts.MikeDennison wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 6:33 amWish I had both of those ol' rifles now. Good memories. You're a gunsmith?!? So cool! You'll appreciate this; while a teen I had a Marlin .22 that I think was modeled on the old Marine M14, peep sites and all. Big ol' heavy wood stock and sling. And brother, you could take a rabbit's eye out on the jump with that thing. I loved that gun.Ronv69 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 12:57 pmYeah, I wish I had my Garand back! Never had the chance to fire an M1, but I've heard they're tough rifles.
