One weird thing I have is a hatred for tampers that don't have a legit pick exposed and ready for use. I don't want to unthread an end cap and slide a pick out to clean the chamber. Silly, but that's how I am. I have some that don't get used because of it

Yeah, I need one to clean the bowl. Banging on a knocker doesnt get it all out. Especially if the bowl is only partially smoked.

I don't use a knocker either. Just scrape the stuff out and dump

That's why I have those little Brebbia nails, cheap enough to grab a handful and scatter so there's likely one somewhere. Finger does most the work, I just need a pick to poke at embers and scrape shit out after.

I just use a stick from the woods, a Buck Stockman and a piece of sandpaper just to smooth them, not remove wood.
Ive misplaced or thrown away most of them. I haven't whittled one in years. As you see I experimented with shapes, inlay and decoration.

That is awesome. I love seeing this stuff. Seems no rhyme or reason to the style. Just whatever you felt like carving?
Seriously this was just done for something to do while smoking.
A lot of them I threw in the woods immediately after whittling.
Then I started throwing them in a bucket in the garage.
The shapes just happened. :)

I must be odd, Ive never used a pick
Just knock it out, run a cleaner and use the bent pipe cleaner to wipe the bowl. Occasionally I run a paper towel inside the bowl to get the loose stuff.

Theres two sides. Those who pick and those who do not. I know which side has cleaner fingers, thats for sure.

Mine are all fairly standard, as I haven't had time to come up with anything interesting yet. I seem to be using the one on the lighter mostly.

As @Thelonious monkfish mentioned, I’ve made a number of antler tampers. These most often coincided with the use of the larger portion of the shed being a knife handle and I use whatever I have (brass, copper, ivory, stabilized wood, bone etc) as an accent. I also put a metal foot on them and as noted as a necessity by @Mr Beardsley the tip gets shaped into a make shift pick. The one on the left is mine that I’ve used for many years. The one on the right is going to a buddy in TN. The pipe nail is for size reference and is my grab and go. The ones I make usually are gifted but I’ve put a couple in box passes.
