I don't filter and only clean a pipe once it won't draw properly. A quick flick mid smoke clears the worst of the tar out of a gurgling pipe. I have a cool old school pipe cleaning device that socks out the tar, will post a picture next time I use it which will be once majority of my favorite pipes ...

The John Brumfit arrived today. It's exquisite. It's obviously well used as still has a fair bit of cake in the bowl. I have this same pipe, its even the same colour.
The filter stones are junk, waste of time.
IMHO it is a good fast smoke but the bowl is way too small and the whole thing looks stupid
