Aches and Pains

After several decades of hard physical work I have accumulated so many injuries, aches and pains that my stride is now a stumble. I draw the concern of passers by who see me coming. Women ask me if I’m alright, young children scramble to get out of my way (probably to avoid being trampled), police officers sometimes question my sobriety, and kind young men offer to help me across the street. I’m just trying to go for a walk dammit! And people wonder why I’m always so grouchy.

Lately I’ve been having trouble with my feet. They’re either freezing cold or sweating. When I lay down to go to bed the bottom of my feet feet sort of numb but also have an almost painful pins-and-needles thing going on. This is whether I’ve been on my feet all day or stretched out on the couch for hours.

Don’t know what that is but it don’t sound good.

I have a shrinking disc in my back, the specialist told me a couple years back, don’t be surprised if you start experiencing issues elsewhere. I guess hoping for hangnails and hair loss was a bit optimistic on my part.

I had gammy ankle. It eased off, so a few days later, a gentle walk ! It rained the next day, so my good lady wife suggested boots. Nice leather walking boots ...... they ripped my achiles tendon, so i'm on crutches, with "deep heat" gel, & menthyl balm. It's taken 2 days to be able to stagger to the kitchen for a cup of tea !

It's a side effect of nerve damage, diabetes and a few others..Usually that tingling numbness stays if your not moving. You should look into it. It can also be Fibromyalgia.

I’ll talk to my doc about it next visit. I had a blood panel done a few weeks ago and one of the things that showed up was what he called borderline pre-diabetes. I also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol and am at least 25 pounds overweight (6’2” 250 pounds as of a month ago, less now), so there’s some work to do. I actually take responsibility for it myself and am working on losing weight and eating differently to try to address these things. I hate taking meds and I refuse to think that most of our maladies are just life and simply require yet another pill. A few years back I lost weight and a lot changed, blood pressure dropped, felt better, hurt less. But then I had some medical issues that set me back and I fell back into the old eating habits and the weight piled back on. Eating right when you’re almost 60 is difficult when you have kids in the house and the wife cooks to suit their wants and needs every night. But, I’ll just have to force myself to do it. I’ve been doing the keto/carnivore thing for about a month and have dropped down to 232 pounds already. It’s a start. I’m kind of wanting to hold off on seeing the doc until I’ve knocked down more weight, just to see how much diet and weight loss fixes everything before I consider any more medications.

I was 5'9" and 230 = obese BMI
BP typically around 132/87
Not medication high, but also elevated cholesterol/triglycerides

Switched diet
Best described by a line from a pretty cool streaming show.....Strangers
Dude makes dinner for wife
He is from future, a vegan, and got put into dude's body right before his untimely death
She says, "That's not dinner, that's what dinner eats"

Pretty freaking funny
My health trajectory, way below average

Six months later
BP 112 /70
LDL 112 with total under 150
Weight 190 with BMI = over-weight

Still working on it but will get there no doubt about it
Goal LDL under 85
BP at or below 110/65
BMI around 23 or slightly less
More importantly, according to health longevity science
Waist-line less than half my height
At these numbers, you are essentially stroke/heart-disease-proof

Diet/nutrition/exercise has worked for me
I was born in the 50s
If I can do it, anyone can

A few years ago I was in Kansas City during a cold snap. Once it got down to about 8 degrees all of my old joint and ligament injuries from my early 20s (Army) came roaring back. Felt pretty well crumpled up.
