Are the casings fitted over a hardwood shank?

Behold, my new (old) Briarcraft Airo panel that was purchased from @Mr Beardsley. I really really like this swanky little piece of American piping history!

Very swanky! Is the "Airo" feature hidden in the rings on the shank?

Well, I'm not really sure what 'Airo' is supposed to do or mean. As the seller pointed out, the metal cut-outs at the joint are strictly cosmetic. It's got a metal screw-in tenon, into which fits a little removable stinger that has off-set slots which slow the draw and was probably designed to condense and trap some of the smoke moisture. It's pretty nifty, and I thought it worked pretty good. I'm a filter guy, so I appreciate any help I can get. Good smoke flavor but no real heat. And the stummel is really a beauty with some nice flame grain.
