Here's what I do: I buy lots of vintage estate pipes on ebay, mostly Dr. Grabow from 1930 -,and fix them up and resell them on eBay for a small profit. I then use those funds to buy good quality pipe tobacco from my local tobacconist. I'm lucky to have one very close to me.
In a nutshell, here's what I usually do to them:
1. Ream the bowl with pipe reamer to get back down to 1mm or thickness of a dime
2. give the bowl a salt and alcohol treatment, if needed
3. Soak the stems in oxyclean and then use magic eraser to remove oxidation and sand with 10000 grit sandpaper.
4. Buff using bench buffer and carnauba wax
Depending on how bad the finish is, I might decide to sand the bowl down and either stain it again with leather dye or sand all the way down with increasing sandpaper grit so that its smooth
A note about scratches and bite marks...I usually don't try to remove these and just leave them be as part of the patina. I think it gives the pipes charm if there are so "battle scars".
I'm interested in what you guys think. It's a labour of love.
thx
