When I kept chickens, I would throw the shelled corn out and the place would be overrun with squirrels snagging as much shelled corn as they could. That shelled corn cost me folding money at the co-op. I had an old spring pellet rifle I would use to take out the squirrels with head shots. The instant the squirrel was down, the chickens wasted no time supplementing their diet with some protein. It was amazing how quickly they could peck one to nothing. This worked out pretty well for me.
