If they're old enough that shellac was used for the clear then alcohol will strip it. If it's a lacquer finish then I guess a commercial stripper would be the ticket. Or old fashioned sand paper and elbow grease

Click-Bait.
I actually need a fix.
Would use Everclear, but it appears that they don't sell it in Virginia.

I’ve shied away from chemical strippers as well. Alcohol as Mr Beardsley noted will normally get it done.
On a related side note my cousin married a stripper. He was a few years younger than me and by then most of late night stupidity was done. My younger brother carried on for years though. Anyway my cousin brought his then girlfriend to our grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving. As soon as my brother saw her he froze and looked at me. I’m giving him the “What?” and he made some excuse to get me outside. He then proceeds to tell me the young lady is a stripper. Well, I didn’t believe him but he was insistent. A couple weekends later I was forced to investigate. Sure enough, he was right. I don’t know who was more embarrassed, me or her. We don’t bring it up at Thanksgiving. Or Christmas.

Denatured Alcohol or 90% Isopropyl for shellac, acetone for lacquer. Both dry and do not leave a residue, despite peoples weirdness about them.
Stains.. that's a totally different story. They are really difficult to remove chemically, and I've always resorted to sanding. I've had success lightening pipes by letting them float in a jar full of alcohol, but the stain was still somewhat there.

Missouri makes some stuff that is not welcome in certain States
Like high VOC stains, EverClear etc
How about some Bacardi 151 ?
Or some high octane vodka ?
