That's not a bad idea at all longshank, use it for the harsher varieties...
I'm kind of an all day smoker, stress relief is very appreciated these days, and I have fried my tongue a few times already with some heavier bacco, which also ruined the good stuff for me for a few days.
And as mentioned, I can always turn it into a real pipe easy enough... guess I'll start the search. I like the look of the rusty billiards they have.
Any experiences with EA Carey?

Ivesmoked them in the past , the magic inch stuff .. my impression was they were kinda " airy ' ... not my thing but they are good pipes . I'm on board with KBB products or Grabow for a reasonable priced pipe . I'm a sucker for a Yello Bole Checker .. ugly and codgerly . They pop up on ebay for cheap sometimes and a new one is only like 25 bucks when wvsmokeshop has them in stock

This cheap Legendex from Italy right now is the best smoker I have, hard to see from the pic but the chamber is egg shaped, this sucker burns clean right to the bottom with a couple light tamps. First experience with something other then a cylindrical bowl, and I notice just how much better this shape works. I've pretty much parked the other pipes at this point.
I do inhale however, so the extra air mixing might be a good thing for me. Plus I'm a sucker for collecting things...so what's one more lol. As long as this hobby doesn't surpass my gun collection I'll be OK

My experience was with one EA Cary pipe years ago. Too airy for me and I didn't want to tape it up. I don't remember what happened to it.

My experience with Magic Inch pipes led me to not change the filters for long periods / many smokes. It seems to me that the more used the filter becomes, the better the draw. I did try some Scotch tape instead of a filter for a while and it worked fine.
Well I ordered a Grabow instead (carved Cardinal), don't have any of those yet either, and figure it might be a safer bet. I'll try an EA down the road or if I see one super cheap.
Thanks for all the advice!

I just saw one of these at a local antique shop and was wondering if it was a worthwhile buy for what they were asking ($32), but after reading this string I think I'll save the $ for something more worthwhile. I see Brigham system pipes are going new from Smoking Pipes for around $45, which seems like a much better deal, and probably a better filter system. Or a new Grabow, of course.
