Refried beans?

What the devil are they?
Are they the same as our British baked beans?

I also checked on the interwebs and they are much the same with the main difference to me being ours aren't mashed.
They're actually quite healthy here (baked) and a staple of my diet.
Which makes the word I learnt while reading about the tex mex variety appropriate.
