Bitter is a small ale style of British pale ale, meaning lower in alcohol and body. They're hard to come by in the States, but are a major family of styles in the UK. Typically a bitter is an easy drinking ale that is rather dry and not particularly bitter, but is bitter in comparison to fuller, maltier styles of English ale due to a higher hop content. Unlike American pale ales, British pales are relatively low-hopped. My favorite bitter was Theakston's Best Bitter, no longer available in these parts. Fuller's ESB is good, too.Ruffinogold wrote: ↑Tue May 17, 2022 11:05 pm I think my favorite beer is Straub . St. Marys , Pa . Pa stuff is the best and Straub is the best of Pa . Some time ago I really enjoyed Redhook ESB .. I dont know what ESB means but I drank that stuff whenever I saw it , which wasnt all the time . First had it in either Maine or New Hampshire around 94 or 95 .
Here's a good primer on bitter ale styles.

Ive had this one on tap , in a bottle and in a can .... it was good in all 3 . Certain beers in a can I dont care for .. PBR is great in a bottle , especially with pizza , but I dont care for it in a can . Strohs was killer in a bottle .. someone needs to replicate that stuff
EXTRA SPECIAL BITTER
Redhook’s flagship beer got its start as a winter seasonal recipe in the mid 80’s. In the early years, Extra Special Bitter earned a reputation as ‘banana beer’ and has been brewed continuously since 1987. ESB’s caramel malt sweetness and subtle spice and fruit hop flavors, quickly defined the style, becoming Seattle’s definitive craft beer and inspiring a new wave of craft beers across the country.
