... but I thought I'd give it a try again.

An overnight soak in alcohol removed the heavy varnish or lacquer "skin." A lot of fills came to light.

Next up Dremel tool.

There's a story about the stem, which is getting an oxyclean bath and barkeeper's friend treatment.

@Bamarick do you have any pics if that GBD you sent me in trade?

Wildcat I bought it from a seller on eBay who stated in his description that it had a replacement stem and that it was made to "fit" with a piece of black tape which indeed it was. I removed the tape, then wrapped the tenon with 50lb braided fishing line and used a dab of Gorilla Instant Glue to hold the line in place. It required just a bit of sanding to make it somewhat fit. I smoked it 2 or 3 times and decided it just wasn't for me. Good luck on the refurb!

Sorry, but I don't have any pictures that I can find at the moment.

Rummaging around on my computer I did find this picture I made before I "customized" the stem. You can see how the tenon was way too long. I shortened the length on my belt sander to make it fit a little better.

It doesn't come out in the pics, but I had an idea... I tried using a non toxic water based green stain for the deep rustication and then the natural wood for the high spots. It looks like hammered copper in person, for real.

This is the second time I've used green as a base. Here's the first, as a base for black. This poor Pete was given to me by the owner of the antique shop. Someone had really screwed the pooch on this one. Great smoking pipe now. Dedicated to Middleton Walnut.
