I am married to a Mexican, and together we regularly imbibe of the various distillates of the agave family. Tequila and Mezcal are the standard-bearers, but there are others that many have never heard of - bacanora, sotol, raicilla - made in geographically distinct areas and from different species of agave with unique flavor profiles. In fact, sotol is made from an entirely different plant, though it is similar in taste to agave distillates. Tonight I am sipping some bacanora blanco, made in northern Mexico (Sonora) and smelling of the sweet desert chaparral from whence it came - light, herbal and heady. A perfect way to end the evening. Cheers, gents.

My sister and brother in law are visiting his family in Oaxaca currently. There's a good chance that they'll snag me another bottle of mescal while there. I still have one (unopened) from the last trip but that's going to change soon

I am not too big of a fan of tequila. I really want to try Mezcal though. Sounds interesting.

Did you have a party last night? That entire shelf looks like trouble.

No, that's just the way things go around here. We have many friends who enjoy drink, and they all know that my wife likes her tequila and mezcal, and that it puts her in a mood to sing. She's a great singer so she is regularly showered with bottled gifts. We don't drink *a lot*, but we do imbibe steadily, and as a result there are usually many very good bottles open to choose from.
As they say in Mexico: "Para todo mal, mezcal; para todo bien, tambien!"
Roughly translated: for all that ails you, mezcal; and for everything good as well!
