This.
And I am crying salty tears into this beer, because today it was announced that Anchor Brewing is shutting its doors and going out of business.
As a Californian, I am ashamed. As a die hard beer geek, I am devastated. Anchor Steam is and has been one of my very favorite brews for some 40 years.
Anchor Brewing is widely credited with fostering the entire US craft brewing boom, when Fritz Maytag (yes, those Maytags) resurrected the nearly defunct brewery, vastly improved the main product, introduced the first hoppy pale ale, and showed everyone on the west coast just how much better beer could be back in the mid 70's.
Now, almost 50 years later, they have lost market share, are apparently unable to turn a profit, and completely lost their mojo after a recent takeover and 'rebranding' effort by Sapporo further mucked things up.
The grand daddy of craft breweries, run into the ground and left for dead. What a travesty. Oh, the humanity!

Tonight I started with a Sierra Nevada Sunny Little Thing. Friend coming over, so we'll see where it goes from there!

Had an Abita Amber tonight in Metairie. Better than the last local beer I had here. (Falstaff)
But not by much. Has to drive down for my nephews 65th. Staying in Mandeville tonight and going home tomorrow. 7 hours drive in the rain.

I was lucky to find Anchor Steam on tap last night, so I enjoyed that. Today I ate lunch at a BJ's and bought some beer to take back to the room, so I just drank an Oasis Amber.
