I know what aeros are, and I do know what Vapers are.
I know the basics of an English, with most with some Latakia. But I have know idea what a Balkan is, and how it’s distinguished from any blend with Latakia in it?
I’ve probably smoked a Balkan before and never knew it.
How would you describe a Balkan with the basic components, and how it would taste? Many thanks,
-Bill

I always thought it was generally tweaked down Latakia and tweaked up Orientals
Hopefully someone with a precise definition will chime in. Blend categorization seem more like an art than something specific.

This is my personal interpretation as well.Middle Earth wrote: ↑Mon Aug 22, 2022 10:17 am I always thought it was generally tweaked down Latakia and tweaked up Orientals
The "Balkan" genre includes a couple of my favorites: Rattray's Red Rapparee and Arango Balkan Supreme.
Oh crap, looks like the Red Rapparee generally gets classified as a "Scottish" blend. I give up... I just smoke what I like!
Summary:
English = Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental, Perique, and/or Virginia = Latakia dominant?
Balkan = Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental, and/or Virginia = Oriental dominant?
Scottish = Cavendish, Latakia, Oriental, and/or Virginia = Nothing dominant?
Let's just whack this thread and pretend that it never happened.

Simply put, Balkans are oriental forward with Latakia and Englishes are more Latakia forward with orientals.

My previous reply was supposed to have a question mark because I really don't know.Mr Beardsley wrote: ↑Mon Aug 22, 2022 12:32 pmAmerican EnglishPiping Abe wrote: ↑Mon Aug 22, 2022 12:14 pm What is a blend that contains Latakia but no orientals?
There's only 2 classifications for tobacco in my world.
1- blends I like
2 - blends I don't like
All the other nonsense matters not at all to this guy

Apparently, these as well... https://www.smokingpipes.com/tobacco/?c ... t=4&page=3
I was under the impression the difference is in an English the latakia is the star of the show and a balkan it is there but not in the spotlight so to speak. But who knows I am always overwhelmed by all the choices in tobacco, which is a problem I don't mind having.
