He might just be doing it for the look. All the cool kids are doing it. Actually, I’m thinking of taking it up myself.
I might have to find a couple broken pipes and try me hand at this zip tie repair too
Just to keep up with the fashion

But then you have @Tsal who buys Insanus pipes like that 8-)

It was a cracked shank. The friction was not enough after the crack to unthread the bit. It would just spin. I had to do something.

The bit is very loose in this pipe, too. And now I know why.

Has anyone ever used a hose clamp? That would be pretty thrifty and codgerly, I think, with the added benefit of having to dick with it every once in awhile to keep the tension correct. Ugly, too! 😆

I prefer a lighter weight clamping mechanism  plus you can pretty easily crush a shank if you hulk up on a hose clamp

But I'm thinking it would look pretty awesome, in all the wrong ways! Maybe a nice antique brass one, for example.

Super glue mixed with briar dust saved from a previous rehab. Pack the crack using an exacto blade or some such. Sand and oil or wax the entirety of the briar and put beeswax on the tenon for a tighter fit.

Only if you don't have a zip tie of course.
